Five things you should be listening to this weekend (Vol. 4)

The clocks go back this weekend, which means we’re getting closer to that period when it’s dark when you leave your house in the morning, and dark when you leave work in the evening. But don’t get too downhearted, because I’ve got another list of songs to get you hyped for the weekend. This week features Caribou, Gorillaz, Penthouse Penthouse, James Blake, and The Geek x Vrv.

Caribou – BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

Caribou – BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix 2014-10-18 by Core News Uploads on Mixcloud

Fresh off the back of releasing his new album, Our Love, Caribou visited the Radio 1 studios to share his latest essential mix, and it’s a doosie. This two hour mix showcases¬†Dan Snaith’s truly eclectic music taste, with tracks from everyone, from Daphni and Joy Orbison, to Daft Punk, Lil Wayne, and James Brown. Time to put on your dancing shoes.

Gorillaz – Superfast Jellyfish

Plastic Beach is up there with my favourite albums of all time; I don’t even want to think how many times I listened to it in a row when it was first released. Then I was lucky enough to see Gorillaz perform live twice in the space of about 3 or 4 months. So imagine my joy when it was announced this week that Damon Albarn is working on a new Gorillaz album, with hopes to release it in 2016. I struggled to pick which Gorillaz song to put up this week, but finally settled on this one.

Penthouse Penthouse – Let Me See That

This week’s next tune comes from Penthouse Penthouse, with the smooth and sexy Let Me See That. This track samples the 90s classic, Thong Song, putting a downtempo, funky twist on the song. I can definitely imagine listening to this while chilling in a penthouse. My flat is the top floor of our building, so pretty much a penthouse, right?!

James Blake – Building It Still

James Blake shared another new song this week while doing his BBC Radio 1 residency. This latest release, Building It Still, keeps the minimalist feel we’ve come to know and love, but seems a little more upbeat than some previous offerings. It’s been a while since his last album, so I’m looking forward to seeing what else he has up his musical sleeves.

The Geek x Vrv – If You Want Her

I recently came across the French duo, The Geek x Vrv, and was a little bit annoyed I hadn’t heard of them sooner. Perfectly mixing funk and soul with old school, hip hop beats, this track will definitely have you nodding your head.
