Five things you should be listening to this weekend (Vol. 12)

Today is the last Friday before Christmas, and while I could make this a festive themed post, I already posted my ultimate Christmas playlist. So if you want festive tunes, go and check that out. Nothing festive here, but great tunes nonetheless.

D’Angelo – Sugah Daddy

The internet lost its mind this week, when out of the blue D’Angelo dropped not just a new single, but a whole new album, Black Messiah. It’s been 14 long years since D’Angelo’s Voodoo, which was an absolute masterpiece, but after listening to Black Messiah on repeat for 5 days I can safely say it was worth the wait. Sugah Daddy is a definite contender for my favourite song of the year.

Kendrick Lamar – Untitled

Kendrick Lamar made an appearance on The Colbert Report on Tuesday night, where he debuted a new, untitled track. Oh, and he brought along Thundercat and Bilal as well, just for good measure. This track follows along the same lines as his last record, i, with elements of funk and soul in place of the more traditional hip-hop beats. This has got me even more excited and eager for his upcoming album.

Wiz Khalifa – Smoke Chambers

If you were to think about artists from different genres that could work together, I bet Wiz Khalifa and Mac Demarco wouldn’t be the first ones to come to mind. Well, Wiz surprised us all when he released Smoke Chambers, which features him rapping over Mac’s Chamber Of Reflections. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s a match made in heaven.

Poldoore – But I Do

This track from Poldoore samples O.V. Wright’s I Don’t Know Why, and gives the soul classic a more uptempo, funk/hip hop vibe to it.

Dirty Gold – California Sunrise

This is definitely more of a summer song, but I’ve been listening to it quite a bit this week, so thought I’d include in. California Sunrise is non-stop, chilled out vibes, and makes me want to be lazing around on a beach somewhere without a care in the world.
