Five things you should be listening to this weekend (Vol. 18)

Pancake day is behind us and now we’re a few days into Lent. I’m not giving up anything for Lent this year, but that’s another story for another time. However, if you’ve decided to give up listening to terrible music for Lent, then you’re in luck. Here’s another five tunes to help you start your weekend off on the right foot.

George the Poet – My Love Is Your Love

I’m off to see George the Poet perform tonight, so felt it was only right to start this post off with him. George is a London born spoken word artist who recently came 5th in the BBC Sound of 2015 poll. This video goes back to 2013 when he visited the BBC Radio 1Xtra Live Lounge – I could have featured one of his newer tracks, but I just can’t get enough of this cover!

Chance the Rapper & The Social Experiment – Wonderful Everyday: Arthur

Chance the Rapper is one of my favourite new hip hop artists of recent years, but it’s been a while since he dropped his debut mixtape, Acid Rap. Rather than resting on his laurels though, Chance has been working away with his band, The Social Experiment, and last year they released their debut album, Surf. Wonderful Everyday is their twist on the Arthur theme tune, and instantly transports me back to a simpler time – racing home from school to see what Arthur and D.W were getting up to!

Blur – Go Out

Britpop fans rejoice! Blur have announced their first new album in 12 years, and have given us a brand new single, Go Out. This announcement just furthers my theory that Damon Albarn is the hardest working man in music. Whether he’s recording new tracks with Blur, working with Gorillaz, putting out his incredible solo record, or creating musicals, he’s always busy!

Action Bronson – Terry

Another new release from the hip hop world this week, as Action Bronson dropped the next single from his forthcoming album, Mr Wonderful. As we’ve come to expect, Terry keeps things simple, letting Action Bronson’s ever impressive lyrics take centre stage. And now we know what his life motto is too – “smoke good, fuck, eat, drink, drive nice car, wear all green mink”.

MNEK – A Thousand Miles

You’ll probably recognise MNEK from Gorgon City’s hit, Ready for Your Love, but he’s also got quite the impressive list of songwriting and production credits as well. In honour of Valentine’s Day, he released his own version of the Vanessa Carlton classic, A Thousand Miles, with a little bit of Love Shack thrown in for good measure. Opinions seem to be divided on this track, but I absolutely love it!
