Five things you should be listening to this weekend (Vol. 37)

That’s right, today Dr Dre finally released the follow up to his monumental, game changing album, 2001. After 16 long years, hip hop fans the world over can finally stop wondering when he was going to put out another record. Initially, we were all waiting for the fabled Detox, which kept getting put further and further back, to the point where we had lost all hope. Well, it seems as though Dre scrapped that idea, and replaced it with Compton, a brand new album inspired by the upcoming NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton. Now, I wish I could put the album in here, but it’s only streaming on Apple Music right now, so you’ll have to go there to get your fix. I’ve still got some great new music for you though.

Here are my five things you should be listening to this weekend.

FKA Twigs – Figure 8

FKA Twigs has been tearing up the festival scene this summer, popping up here, there and everywhere – she was definitely one of my highlights at this year’s Glastonbury. Anyway, as if touring the world wasn’t enough, she gave us an extra treat when she dropped brand new single, Figure 8, on Zane Lowe’s Beats1 radio show earlier this week. I think it’s safe to say that when Zane describes this new track as “an absolute banger”, he’s not lying.

Jamie Woon – Sharpness

Jamie Woon burst onto the scene back in 2011 with his outstanding album, Mirrorwriting, which made everyone fall in love with him. Since then he’s been pretty quiet though, keeping a low profile, until now. Yesterday he quietly released Sharpness, a new track from his upcoming follow-up album, which doesn’t have a name yet. Sharpness demonstrates that Jamie definitely hasn’t lost his touch, retaining that smooth, sultry vibe he’s known for.

So last year, Four Tet started playing BACK2THESTART during some of his sets, but it wasn’t until this week that he finally released the track on his SoundCloud, in his usual nonchalant manner. This 7 and a half minute epic features samples from Ellie Goulding and Cheryl Cole and is bloody lovely.

Demo Taped – Not Enough

Demo Taped dropped Not Enough a couple of months back, but I only came across it this week and had to share it. This is one of those tunes that you’ll find yourself tapping your feet and nodding your head to without even realising.

Oscar Wildstyle & Wiggie Smalls – Summer Jams vol.3

Oscar Wildstyle & Wiggie Smalls, also known as two of the main driving forces behind one of Manchester’s favourite club nights, Juicy, just released another mixtape. Summer Jams vol. 3 is exactly what you’d expect it to be, a solid hour’s worth of straight up summer vibes.
