“You’re looking for a moment when you feel you’re as close to the soul as possible. That’s what good design is.”
Friday sees the launch of Abstract: The Art of Design, a new original documentary series from Netflix. Each episode will centre around a different world famous designer, shining a light on their work, their methods and their inspirations.
From the trailer, it looks like Netflix are giving the design world the same treatment they gave the culinary world in Chef’s Table, which is no bad thing. If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend checking out Chef’s Table, easily one of the best looking documentaries since Planet Earth.
This series looks set to cover design in all its forms, with the list of subjects including: Paula Scher (Graphic Designer), Christoph Niemann (Illustrator), Platon (Photographer), Tinker Hatfield (Nike Shoe Designer), Ralph Gilles (Automotive Designer), Bjarke Ingels (Architect), Ilse Crawford (Interior Designer) and Es Devlin (Stage Designer).
I’ve got high hopes for this, especially as Netflix have a pretty impressive track record when it comes to original programming. House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, BoJack Horseman, Master of None, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Stranger Things, F is for Family, Narcos, The OA, Wet Hot American Summer – the list goes on and on.
Fingers crossed this continues the trend.
