Five things you should be listening to this weekend (Vol. 46)

Everything is Recorded - Mountains of Gold

It’s that time of the year again, guys. That wonderful, special time when cities around the country are flooded with excitable teens, ready to start their new lives armed with nothing but an IKEA dinner set, a Pulp Fiction poster and a pocket full of dreams. That’s right, it’s freshers week!

So, whether you’re a fresher trying to impress your new mates, or someone who graduated years ago and is trying to relive those wild, hedonistic days, a good soundtrack is essential. Here are five things you should be listening to this weekend.

Mahalia – Sober

We’re kicking things off with Mahalia, who popped into the COLORS Berlin studio recently for a rendition of Sober. I’m sure a lot of freshers will be able to relate to this track over the coming weeks, as they wake up and get that morning-after, ‘Did I really say that’ moment of dread. Enjoy!

The Mouse Outfit – I Wonder (Feat. IAMDDB & Fox)

This weekend sees Manchester’s The Mouse Outfit set out on a tour of the UK, which runs until December and will take them all over the country. I Wonder feels like a classic summer jam to me, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be playing it through autumn and into winter. Also, I don’t know about you but I’m a big fan of IAMDDB’s Union Jack outfit. Remixing Geri Halliwell’s infamous dress for the streetwear generation. Bold.

Nao – Nostalgia

Nao is currently hiding away, working on the follow-up to her superb debut album, For All We Know. Not to leave fans completely out in the cold, last week she announced on Twitter that she’d be treating us to some new music while we wait. Nostalgia is the first of these (hopefully regular) releases, and is bouncy, funky and all sorts of fun.

Jerome Thomas – The Stone

This week, Jerome Thomas released the video for The Stone, lead single from his debut EP, Conversations. The visuals match the chilled-out vibe of the track perfectly, with Jerome wandering around some woods and playing with big sticks. Fun way to spend an afternoon, I guess.

Everything Is Recorded – Mountains of Gold (Feat. Sampha, Ibeyi, Wiki & Kamasi Washington)

Mountains of Gold is the newest track to come from Everything Is Recorded, the latest project from producer and head of XL Recordings, Richard Russell. Back in May, he released Close But Not Quite, a cracking five-track EP featuring big names like Sampha and Giggs. Mountains of Gold follows on in this same vein, bringing together Sampha, Ibeyi, Wiki and Kamasi Washington to create a unique, standout song.
